In order to open a bank account in Beijing, a foreigner needs to present his/her valid passport. A signature is also required in the application form. Local resident status is not necessary, even a tourist visa will do. There are four major banks in Beijing, Bank of China, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China Construction Bank, and Agricultural Bank of China. China Merchants Bank actually provides the best service; unfortunately it’s relatively smaller compared with the “big four” and has fewer branches in Beijing.
Chinese banks are usually open Monday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00. Business hour changes during the Spring Festival and other major official holidays.
Banks in Beijing are usually very clean and provide quite professional services. Bank tellers can speak simple English which is enough to handle all your banking related requests. Each bank branch usually has at least one “Foreign Exchange Window” which caters to the needs of foreign currencies related activities. More often than not, there is a shorter queue in front of this window compared with other windows which handle local Chinese currency business only. Overcrowded bank is an issue waiting to be solved for very long time.
Chinese banks offer automatic teller machines (ATM). At ATMs one can withdraw money, transfer money and pay bills. But most of ATMs on the street do not have the function of depositing money. ATMs provide service 24 by 7, and they all have both Chinese and English operation panel.
ATMs can be found in major malls, transportation hubs, post offices, commercial buildings, and bank branches. If you have a foreign banking card, you can only use it at ATMs of Bank of China, ICBC, China Merchants Bank, or a selective few foreign banks.
